Since Christmas falls at the height of summer in South Africa,

roasting food on the barbeque-- or braai in Afrikaans-- is a Christmas tradition.

An easy and delicious South African recipe is chocolate dipped marshmallows. Although the original recipe calls for melting the chocolate over an open fire, this easy version is made in the microwave. And instead of just dipping the marshmallows in melted chocolate, get creative with sprinkles, crushed candy canes, or drizzled white chocolate. Include the family, kids (of all ages) will enjoy making and eating this tasty treat.

Ingredients

2 cups semi-sweet morsels (chocolate bark can be substituted)

10 large marshmallows

Bamboo skewers, lollipop sticks or toothpicks

Sprinkles (optional)

Crushed candy canes (optional)

Crushed graham crackers (optional)

Crushed candy: butterfinger, Snickers, Twix

Crushed cookies : oreos, vanilla wafers, etc. (optional)

Chopped nuts (optional)

Crushed pretzels (optional)

Wilton's Candy Melts (comes in a wide variety of colors for melting and drizzling) (optional)

Melt the chocolate in a microwave-safe glass or ceramic bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring after each interval. Do not overheat or chocolate will scorch.

Dip the marshmallows in chocolate using a toothpick or fork to hold them.* Place on waxed paper or aluminum foil, and freeze. Let marshmallows sit at room temperature for 5 minutes before serving.

Variations: If adding sprinkles, or crushed goodies, dip roll/dip immediately in toppings after coating in chocolate.
